francesca

i’ve been staying a lot of late nights in the studio lately, and outside of quick take-
away dinners in between work with cat & isobel, and anyone else on our floor
staying late, these are two favourite albums that have been keeping me in almost
constant company lately. i’ve also been listening to a lot of jarvis cocker’s radio
show, and now it feels like we share a studio … it’s getting weird.

i. romica puceanu : cine nu stie ce-i doru : electrecord records : 1977

even if i sometimes think that i might just recognise a romanian word here or there,
i really have no idea what romica puceanu sings about. she has one of the most
incredible voices i’ve ever heard, something like a romanian nina simone or billy
holiday, that it doesn’t really matter so much. i’ve loved this album for a really long
time, and i don’t think that i ever get tired of putting it on and wondering what she
might be singing about.

ii. oh graveyard, you can’t hold me always : various artists : mississippi records

like everything archived by mississippi records, this is a really beautiful compil-
ation of street-front and gospel music. i really can’t describe just how much i’ve
been obsessed with this album recently. even though i’ve never had much time for
religion, gospel and songs like these have always seemed like they were about much
bigger ideas, full of beautiful words and thoughts.

++ i really enjoyed this brian eno interview on jarvis cocker’s radio show, playing
gospel from his own collection, and talking about its history and listening to it now
outside of the religious context – super recommended!

i’ve also been re-re-re-reading {can you tell from the wear & tear or what?? } these two books in
between breaks, waiting for paint to dry and scans to load.
